Airport Overview

Dubai International Airport (officially Dubai International Airport) serves as the principal gateway to the United Arab Emirates and stands as the world's busiest international airport by passenger volume for over a decade. Located in the Al Garhoud district, approximately 4.7 km (2.9 miles) east of Dubai's city center, the airport spreads across 1,750 hectares (4,300 acres) and operates around the clock, 365 days a year. It is operated by Dubai Airports, a government-owned entity that also manages Dubai World Central (Al Maktoum International Airport). Emirates Airline, one of the world's largest long-haul carriers, uses DXB as its primary hub and accounts for approximately 51% of all passenger traffic and 42% of all aircraft movements at the airport.

In 2024, Dubai International shattered its own records by welcoming 92.3 million passengers β€” surpassing the previous all-time record of 89.1 million set in 2018. The airport handled 2.2 million tonnes of cargo (a 20.5% year-on-year increase) and registered 440,300 aircraft movements. December 2024 was the single busiest month in the airport's history, with 8.2 million passengers. The airport connects travelers to 272 destinations across 107 countries via 106 international airlines, making it one of the most connected aviation hubs on the planet. It reached its one billionth cumulative passenger milestone on 20 December 2018.

Originally opened in 1959 as a single asphalt runway, Dubai Airport expanded steadily alongside Dubai's explosive economic growth. Terminal 1 (Sheikh Rashid Terminal) opened in 2000, while the landmark Terminal 3 β€” the fourth-largest building in the world by floor space and the largest airport terminal in the world β€” opened in 2008 exclusively for Emirates operations. It comprises three sub-concourses (A, B, and C) and includes a dedicated Concourse A for Emirates' Airbus A380 fleet, constructed at a cost of $3.5 billion. Terminal 2 serves flydubai and regional carriers. A $7.8 billion expansion program has been underway, including a planned Concourse D.

What makes DXB unique is its combination of unrivaled global connectivity, world-class duty-free retail (Dubai Duty-Free is one of the top-grossing airport retail operations in the world), and its strategic position between East and West that enables one-stop connections to virtually any point on the globe within a single long-haul flight. The airport won ACI's "World's Busiest International Airport" title for the 10th consecutive year in 2023, and in 2024 it confirmed its lead over second-place London Heathrow by more than 12 million passengers.

Transportation Guide

Getting from Dubai International Airport to the City

Dubai International Airport (DXB) is exceptionally well-served by public and private transport, with the Dubai Metro, public buses, metered taxis, ride-hailing apps, and car rentals all readily available from all three terminals. The airport sits approximately 14–15 km by road from Downtown Dubai, and travel times to the city center range from as little as 15 minutes by taxi (off-peak) to 25–35 minutes by Metro.

Dubai Metro β€” Red Line

The Dubai Metro Red Line (MRed) is the fastest, cheapest, and most reliable way to reach central Dubai from the airport. Metro stations are directly connected to Terminal 1 (Airport Terminal 1 Metro Station) and Terminal 3 (Airport Terminal 3 Metro Station). Terminal 2 passengers must take a free inter-terminal shuttle bus to Terminal 1 first.

  • Route: Red Line connects both airport stations to central hubs including Union, Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, Emirates Towers, Mall of the Emirates, and Dubai Marina.
  • Journey time: Approximately 25–35 minutes to Downtown Dubai (Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station).

Both Uber and Careem operate at DXB. Prices are dynamic and may slightly exceed or undercut metered taxis depending on demand. Pickup points are marked with black banners and are located in designated parking areas approximately 100–150 meters from the terminal buildings. Follow in-app instructions for the exact pickup zone.

  • To Downtown Dubai: Approximately AED 50–80 (€13–€22) in standard class; higher during surge pricing.

There is no official time limit, and speeds are generally adequate for video streaming and calls. This service is available in Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 3, and all concourses.
How early should I arrive at Dubai International Airport?
Dubai Airports recommends arriving at least 3 hours before your scheduled departure for international flights. This is especially important during peak travel periods (October–April, major UAE holidays) when Terminal 3 and Terminal 1 can be exceptionally busy. Check-in counters typically open 3 hours before departure. For Emirates flights in Terminal 3, allow extra time if checking in with a large group or excess baggage. For flydubai at Terminal 2, 2.5 hours is generally sufficient.
Can I sleep overnight at Dubai International Airport?
Yes, DXB is an excellent airport for overnight stays. Terminal 3 in particular is comfortable for 24-hour layovers, with plenty of seating, 24-hour dining options, free WiFi, clean restrooms, and a welcoming environment. The airport operates round the clock and does not enforce any restrictions on passengers remaining overnight. For comfort, the Dubai International Hotel (Terminal 3 airside) offers rooms from AED 800/night, and day-use rates (~AED 400–600 for 6 hours) are available for passengers who want a proper rest.
Where can I store luggage at Dubai International Airport?
Left luggage facilities are available in the Arrivals areas of all three terminals. Look for 'Left Luggage' or 'Baggage Storage' signs upon exiting the baggage claim area. Rates are approximately AED 35–50 (€9–€14) per item per 24-hour period. Storage is available 24/7. It is advisable to retain your receipt as you will need it for retrieval. You do not need to go through security to access these facilities if you are on the landside.
Which terminal does Emirates use at DXB?
Emirates operates exclusively from Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport. Terminal 3 has three concourses β€” Concourse A (for Airbus A380 operations), Concourse B, and Concourse C (which at Terminal 3 handles Emirates overflow). The Metro Red Line serves Terminal 3 directly. All Emirates check-in, lounges, and boarding are within Terminal 3. Qantas flights also depart from Terminal 3 due to their codeshare partnership with Emirates.
What airlines operate from Terminal 1 at DXB?
Terminal 1 (Sheikh Rashid Terminal) handles over 100 international airlines, including all three major global alliances: Star Alliance (Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Air India, etc.), oneworld (British Airways, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, etc.), and SkyTeam (Air France, KLM, Korean Air, etc.). It is the terminal for virtually all carriers except Emirates, Qantas, and flydubai. The Metro Red Line also serves Terminal 1 directly.
Are there airport lounges I can access with Priority Pass at DXB?
Yes. Several lounges at DXB accept Priority Pass, DragonPass, and LoungeKey. The Marhaba Lounge in Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 is the primary independently operated lounge available to Priority Pass holders. The SkyTeam Lounge in Terminal 1 is accessible to SkyTeam Elite Plus members. Access pricing for pay-per-use visitors is approximately USD 50–75 per person. Emirates lounge access is restricted to Emirates ticket holders in corresponding cabin classes.
What is the Dubai Duty-Free and what can I buy?
Dubai Duty-Free (DDF) is one of the world's top-performing airport retail operations, with annual sales exceeding USD 2.1 billion. It operates in both Arrivals and Departures zones across all terminals. Product categories include perfumes and cosmetics, electronics, tobacco and alcohol, confectionery, gold and jewelry, watches, fashion, and local gifts such as Arabic oud perfumes, saffron, and premium dates. Luxury brands include Cartier, Rolex, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Hermès. DDF also runs frequent promotions and a famous monthly Finest Surprise raffle with luxury car prizes.
Where can I exchange currency or find an ATM at DXB?
Currency exchange bureaus (including UAE Exchange and Al Ansari Exchange) and ATMs are located in Arrivals and Departures halls of all three terminals. Note that airport exchange rates are typically less favorable than in the city. For the best rates, use an international multi-currency card (such as Wise or Revolut) at an ATM, which will give you the mid-market rate with a small transaction fee. ATMs are also available airside within the departure zones and concourses.
What is the smoking policy at Dubai International Airport?
Smoking (including vaping and e-cigarettes) is prohibited throughout all terminal buildings except in specially designated smoking rooms/areas. Designated smoking areas are available in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 both landside and airside. There is no smoking permitted in open corridors, lounges, restaurants, or any non-designated area. Violations can result in fines under UAE law. Note that importing e-cigarette liquids containing nicotine into the UAE is regulated β€” check current UAE customs rules before traveling.
Is there a bus between terminal 1, 2, and 3 at DXB?
Yes. A free inter-terminal shuttle bus runs between all three terminals 24/7. Terminal 2 does not have a Metro connection, so passengers traveling to or from Terminal 2 should use the shuttle bus to reach the Metro at Terminal 1 or 3. The shuttle takes approximately 10–15 minutes between terminals. The Metro Red Line directly connects Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 in about 5 minutes. When connecting between flights across terminals, allow at least 30–45 minutes and check your airline's minimum connection time.

Pro Tips for Dubai International Airport

At The Airport:
  • Terminal 3 Concourse A is the quietest concourse for A380 passengers β€” it has shorter security queues, better seating options, and the free shower facilities. If you have time to spare before an A380 departure, head there early and use the showers at the Gates A area (entirely free, no lounge membership required).
  • The Smart Gates at Terminal 3 immigration use facial recognition and can process eligible passengers in under 30 seconds β€” look for the green 'Smart Gate' lanes when arriving, and register your Emirates ID or passport biometrics if you're a frequent UAE visitor.
  • For the best dining value airside, skip the Concourse A restaurants and head to Concourse B's Shakespeare and Co. cafΓ© or The Noodle House β€” both offer more generous portions and better ambiance than the fast-food outlets near the gates.
  • If you land at Terminal 2 (flydubai) and need the Metro, take the free terminal shuttle to Terminal 1 β€” the shuttle stop is clearly marked outside Arrivals, and the ride to T1 Metro station takes about 10 minutes, far cheaper than a taxi to the nearest Metro stop.
Before You Fly:
  • If departing from Terminal 3 (Emirates), use the Dubai Airports app or website to check real-time queue times at immigration and security β€” on busy winter evenings (October–April), departure security at Concourse B can take 20–30 minutes, so add buffer time.
  • Purchase a Nol Silver Card online or at a Metro station in the city before heading to the airport β€” it saves time queuing at ticket machines in Arrivals. The Silver Card is reusable, cheaper per ride than the Red paper ticket, and works on Metro, buses, trams, and water buses.
  • Dubai Duty-Free has an online pre-order service at shop.dubaidutyfree.com β€” you can browse and reserve items before your flight and collect airside, saving browsing time and sometimes securing better promotions.
  • During April 2024, DXB suffered significant flooding damage from historic UAE rainfall. The airport has since recovered fully, but travel insurance with disruption coverage is always recommended when transiting through Dubai, particularly during the rare UAE rainy season (November–March).
Common Mistakes:
  • Assuming a 1-hour connection is sufficient at DXB when connecting between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 (or vice versa) β€” you must exit the secure area, take a shuttle, re-clear security, and re-clear immigration in some cases. Emirates officially recommends a minimum of 90 minutes for same-terminal connections and 2 hours for cross-terminal connections.
  • Taking a taxi from the unofficial 'private' drivers who approach passengers inside the terminal β€” DXB's official taxis are always cream-colored with a meter and found only at the designated taxi ranks outside Arrivals. Unofficial touts inside the building will overcharge significantly.
  • Forgetting that Friday is the first day of the UAE weekend β€” the Metro on Fridays starts at 10:00 (not 05:30 like other days), which means early Friday morning arrivals must use taxis or buses to reach the city, and connecting to the Metro is not possible before 10:00.
