Airport Overview

Suvarnabhumi International Airport (IATA: BKK, ICAO: VTBS), also known as Bangkok International Airport and unofficially called "New Bangkok Airport," is Thailand's primary international gateway and the busiest airport in Southeast Asia by international passenger traffic. The name "Suvarnabhumi" β€” chosen by King Bhumibol Adulyadej β€” translates from Sanskrit as "Land of Gold," a reference to the legendary golden Buddhist kingdom thought to lie somewhere east of the Ganges. The airport is located in Racha Thewa, Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan Province, approximately 30 km (18.7 miles) east of Bangkok city centre, and opened on 28 September 2006, replacing Don Mueang as the primary international hub.

Suvarnabhumi serves as the principal hub for Thai Airways International (Star Alliance) and as an operating base for Bangkok Airways, Thai VietJet Air, and Thai AirAsia X. The airport hosts the highest number of airlines of any airport in the world as of 2025, with 126 scheduled airlines operating from it β€” surpassing even Dubai. In 2024, the airport handled 62,234,693 passengers and 466,543+ aircraft movements, ranking as the 14th–20th busiest in the world (sources vary), the 9th busiest in Asia, and the busiest in Thailand by a wide margin. Cargo volumes exceeded 1.4 million tonnes annually, cementing BKK's role as a major Asian freight hub.

The airport's iconic main terminal β€” one of the largest single terminal buildings in the world at approximately 563,000 square metres β€” was designed by renowned German architect Helmut Jahn of Murphy/Jahn in the form of a sweeping glass-and-steel "bird in flight" canopy. The terminal's seven international concourses (A–G) are arranged in an H-pattern. In September 2023, a spectacular new midfield Satellite Terminal 1 (SAT-1) opened, adding 28 gates and 15 million passengers of annual capacity. SAT-1 was designed by Netherlands Airport Consultants and features Thai cultural elements, elephant sculptures, and tropical interior gardens; it was nominated among UNESCO's Prix Versailles World's Most Beautiful Airports for 2024. A third runway opened 1 November 2024, increasing operational capacity from 68 to 94 flights per hour. Ambitious expansion plans include a new South Terminal (capacity 70M pax/yr, opening 2031) and East Expansion project, targeting 80 million total capacity by the late 2020s.

Terminals & Gates

Main Terminal Building (MTB)

Suvarnabhumi's Main Terminal Building is one of the largest airport buildings in the world, covering approximately 563,000 square metres and laid out in an H-shaped plan across 5 levels (including basement). Designed by German architect Helmut Jahn of Murphy/Jahn and opened in 2006, the building is celebrated for its sweeping glass-and-steel canopy that evokes a giant bird in flight. The Thai elements of the design were influenced by local mythology and Buddhist symbolism.

Terminal levels:

  • Level B (Basement): Airport Rail Link station; Boxtel micro-hotel near ARL station; baggage storage (AIRPORTELs left-luggage, next to ARL)
  • Level 1: Arrivals hall; public transportation hub; taxi ranks (exits 4 and 6); Grab pick-up (Gate 4); bus terminals; Grab Zone; AOT services
  • Level 2: International arrivals β€” immigration, baggage claim, customs. Domestic arrivals. Meeting points. Ground transportation signs. Connecting to covered walkway to Novotel hotel.
  • Level 3: International and domestic departures β€” airline check-in counters, ticketing, airport services. Connections to all concourses (A–G) after security.
  • Level 4: International departures (post-immigration and security). Duty-free shopping, lounges, restaurants, gates. Access to concourses B–G.

Concourse layout (post-security, international departures):

  • Concourse A: Domestic flights only (Thai Airways domestic, Bangkok Airways domestic, Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, Lion Air Thai). Domestic check-in on Level 3.
  • Concourse B: International β€” mixed carriers. West zone.
  • Concourse C: International β€” Star Alliance carriers and others. West zone. The Coral Cosmo and Cocoon (Finest Business) lounges.
  • Concourse D: International β€” Thai Airways long-haul hub, Korean Air, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and many others. Central position. Best selection of lounges: Thai Royal First/Orchid/Silk, JAL Sakura, SilverKris (Singapore Airlines), The Coral First/Business, Miracle Business. Bangkok Airways Boutique and Blue Ribbon lounges in Concourse D (domestic section).
  • Concourse E: International β€” East zone. Thai Royal Silk Lounge, EVA Air VIP Lounge.
  • Concourse F: International β€” East zone. EVA Air Bangkok VIP Lounge; Miracle Business Lounge. Thai VietJet routes.
  • Concourse G: International β€” East zone. Emirates Lounge. Miracle First and Business Lounges. Some AirAsia X routes. Most easterly concourse β€” allow 20 min from central area.

Note on navigation: The H-shaped main terminal is very large. Walking from Concourse A (domestic) to Concourse G (far east international) takes approximately 20 minutes. Moving walkways and clear bilingual signage ease navigation. Follow overhead directional signs carefully β€” the domestic and international sides are distinct.

SAT-1 β€” Midfield Satellite Terminal 1

The Midfield Satellite Terminal 1 (SAT-1) partially opened September 2023 and was fully operational from early 2024. It was designed by Netherlands Airport Consultants with Design 103 International. The building covers 251,400 mΒ² across 4 levels with 2 underground floors, accommodating 28 contact gates β€” 8 for Code F aircraft (Airbus A380, Boeing 747-8) and 20 for Code E aircraft. SAT-1 was nominated among UNESCO's Prix Versailles 2024 World's Most Beautiful Airports, celebrating its design blending Thai cultural heritage with futuristic architecture. The interior features a celebrated elephant sculpture in the central hall (Level 3), mythical Himaphan creatures in garden areas, and tropical rainforest-themed interior gardens with natural light.

SAT-1 is connected to the Main Terminal via an underground Automated People Mover (APM) using Siemens NeoVAL technology. The APM journey takes approximately 3 minutes at up to 80 km/h. SAT-1 currently handles routes operated by Thai AirAsia X (Japan, Korea, China routes), Thai VietJet Air (Singapore, Vietnam, Taiwan), and several other carriers including larger aircraft from airlines such as Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar. Check your boarding pass: Gates S101–S128 require travel to SAT-1 via APM.

  • SAT-1 lounges: Miracle First Class Lounge (SAT-1 airside)
  • SAT-1 facilities: Meditation room, separate prayer rooms (men/women), baby care room, children's play area, universal USB charging at seats, shops and dining. 53 elevators, 83 escalators, 38 moving walkways.
  • Allow: At least 15 extra minutes to reach SAT-1 gates from the main terminal after security (APM journey + walking time).

Transportation Guide

Getting from Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) to Bangkok City Centre

Suvarnabhumi Airport is 30 km east of central Bangkok and is served by an excellent range of transport options. Bangkok is infamous for severe road traffic jams, particularly during rush hours (07:00–09:30 and 16:00–20:00) and on weekend evenings. Choosing the right transport option for your arrival time can save you up to an hour.

Airport Rail Link (ARL) β€” Fastest and Most Reliable

The Airport Rail Link (ARL), operated as the AERA1 City Line, is the fastest way from BKK to downtown Bangkok and completely immune to road traffic. The ARL station is located on the Basement Level (B Floor) of the main terminal building β€” follow the "Airport Rail Link" or "Train to City" blue/red signs from the Level 2 arrivals area down by lift or escalator.

  • Route: Suvarnabhumi (A1) β†’ Lat Krabang (A2) β†’ Ban Thap Chang (A3) β†’ Hua Mak (A4, MRT Yellow Line) β†’ Ramkhamhaeng (A5) β†’ Makkasan (A6, MRT Blue Line interchange via 5-min walk) β†’ Ratchaprarop (A7) β†’ Phaya Thai (A8, BTS Sukhumvit Skytrain interchange)
  • Journey time: 26–30 minutes airport to Phaya Thai; 22 minutes to Makkasan (MRT interchange)
  • Fare: THB 15–45 depending on distance (airport to Phaya Thai = THB 45 / ~€1.15; to Makkasan = THB 35); children under 90 cm travel free
  • Frequency: Every 10 minutes during peak hours (06:00–09:00 and 16:00–20:00); every 12–15 minutes off-peak and weekends
  • Operating hours: 05:10/05:15 first departure to ~midnight (last train ~00:30)
  • Payment (2025): Token from vending machines (cash or card); contactless Visa/Mastercard/JCB/UnionPay directly at turnstiles since November 2025; Rabbit Card (BTS top-up card). English menus on all machines.
  • Note: For Sukhumvit, Silom, Siam area β€” get off at Phaya Thai (BTS) or Makkasan (MRT Asoke). For Khao San Road, a taxi from Phaya Thai is still needed.

Public Bus (S1 β€” Airport Bus)

The S1 airport shuttle bus runs from Suvarnabhumi to Public Transportation Hub on Level 1 (Gate 7 area) to Samut Prakan and Don Mueang stations. Fare: THB 60. Useful for budget travellers heading to Pratunam/Ratchaprarop but very traffic-dependent (60–120+ minutes). Local bus routes 552, 554, 556, 557, and 559 also depart from the ground transportation centre on Level 1, primarily useful for residents in eastern Bangkok suburbs. Not recommended for first-time visitors with heavy luggage.

Taxi β€” Metered with Surcharge

Public taxis (taxi-meters) are available from the official taxi queue on Level 1, between exits 4 and 6. Collect a numbered ticket from the automatic kiosk β€” it directs you to a specific taxi. Never accept offers from touts approaching you in arrivals halls.

  • Fare structure: Metered rate starting at THB 35 flag-fall for 1 km, then THB 6.50/km (1–10 km). A THB 50 airport surcharge is added to all metered fares from the airport (not shown on meter β€” pay separately). Expressway tolls (typically THB 25–75 total) are also paid by the passenger.
  • Typical total to central Bangkok (Sukhumvit/Silom): THB 300–500 (~€7.50–€12.50) including meter, surcharge, and tolls. Expect more during peak traffic.
  • Journey time: 30–45 minutes off-peak; 60–90+ minutes during rush hour
  • Payment: Cash (Thai Baht) only for most drivers; carry small notes as some drivers claim they have no change
  • CABB (premium taxi): Available from Level 1 β€” distinctive shiny blue London-style cabs with uniformed drivers. Fares approximately 1.5–2Γ— standard meter. Good English communication and reliable service.

Grab and Bolt (Ride-Hailing)

Since March 2024, Grab (Thailand's dominant ride-hailing app, equivalent to Uber) has its own dedicated pick-up point at Gate 4, Level 1 β€” walk outside and follow the Grab signs. Bolt also operates in Bangkok. Grab prices are pre-set so you know the fare before booking β€” typically THB 350–600 to central Bangkok. Note that a THB 20 surcharge applies for Grab Taxi (metered) options. Grab Car (private car) uses fixed upfront pricing. Surge pricing applies during heavy rain or peak times. The app may show a driver arriving quickly but Bangkok traffic can delay actual pickup significantly.

Free Shuttle β€” BKK to Don Mueang Airport (DMK)

A free shuttle bus operates between Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang Airport for passengers connecting between the two airports. Departs from Level 2 Arrivals, outside Gate 3. Show your connecting flight ticket. Journey time: 45–90 minutes depending on traffic. Runs approximately 05:00–24:00, every 30 minutes.

Private Transfer

Pre-booked private transfers are available via AOT Limousine (official airport service) at the arrivals hall, or booked in advance online. Driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign, waits up to 90 minutes for delayed flights. Prices from THB 700+ to central Bangkok. Recommended for families, groups, or business travellers with heavy luggage.

Limousine / AOT Taxi

The official AOT Taxi / Limousine counter is on Level 1 (public transportation hub). Offers fixed-fare metered or pre-agreed journeys. Prices higher than street taxis but vehicles are newer and service quality guaranteed.

Services & Facilities

WiFi

Free WiFi is available throughout all terminals and concourses at Suvarnabhumi. Connect to the "Airportthai_FreeWifi" network. The free service has historically been limited to 2 hours per session; re-connect using a different device or after the session expires. For faster, unlimited speeds, True Move H, AIS, and DTAC SIM cards can be purchased from counters in the arrivals hall (Level 2) for THB 299–599 for 7–30 day data packages β€” excellent value and highly recommended for visitors.

Lounges

Suvarnabhumi has one of the largest and most varied lounge ecosystems in Asia, though a major change occurred on 1 April 2025 when AOT removed all airline-operated lounges from Priority Pass and Dragonpass programs. Now only the two Thai-owned independent lounge networks accept Priority Pass:

  • Miracle Lounges β€” Multiple locations throughout all international concourses (A, C, D, F, G) and SAT-1. Open 24 hours. Features buffet food (Thai and international), bar, shower rooms. Priority Pass accepted. Walk-up prices from approximately THB 1,200–1,600 (~€30–€40) for 3 hours. Thai and international cuisine with tom yum soup, rice dishes, and more.
  • The Coral Executive Lounges β€” Located in Concourses C, D, and A (domestic). Open 24 hours (international); 05:00–22:00 (domestic). Noted for Thai dΓ©cor, buffet with authentic Thai dishes (pad thai, green curry, mango sticky rice), shower facilities. Priority Pass accepted. Walk-up from ~THB 1,200 (~€30). The Coral Finest Business Class Lounge (Concourse C, "Cosmo" and "Cocoon") offers premium options.

Airline-operated lounges (requiring premium cabin or status):

  • Thai Airways Royal First Class Lounge and Royal Orchid Plus Lounge (Concourse D) β€” Thai Airways First/Business and elite status
  • Singapore Airlines SilverKris Lounge (Concourse D, opposite Gate D7) β€” First/Business on SQ
  • Japan Airlines JAL Sakura Lounge (Concourse D, Level 3)
  • Emirates Lounge (Concourse G) β€” First/Business on EK
  • Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Business Lounge (Concourse D) β€” excellent QR lounge
  • Cathay Pacific Lounge (Concourse D)

Shopping

Suvarnabhumi offers extensive duty-free and retail shopping, particularly in the international departures areas on Level 4 across all concourses. The King Power duty-free complex is the dominant operator — Thailand's flagship duty-free retailer — and offers excellent pricing on cosmetics, spirits, tobacco, electronics, and luxury goods. Brands available include Hermès, Chanel, Gucci, Bulgari, Cartier, Rolex, Louis Vuitton, and many more. Thai silk, local handicrafts, snacks, and specialty food items are widely available. Note: Thai duty-free prices on cosmetics and perfumes are genuinely competitive by international standards.

Dining

Dining options span all levels and concourses. Post-security international departures areas offer a wide variety β€” from upscale sit-down Thai restaurants (Greyhound CafΓ©, Coffee Club) to Japanese ramen, McDonald's, Burger King, Subway, Starbucks, and authentic Thai street food. Notable options: the Food Park on Level 3 (before security, domestic side) offers affordable local Thai food. MK Restaurant (popular Thai hotpot) is available in multiple concourses. Price ranges: street food snacks THB 80–150; sit-down restaurants THB 300–600/person. 24-hour dining is available via the Novotel hotel restaurant (Level 2 corridor) and several concourse outlets.

Medical

An airport medical centre is located on Level 2, Gate 5 in the arrivals hall. A 24-hour pharmacy (Boots) is available on Level 4 (international departures), and in the public areas on Level 2. For serious medical emergencies, call 1669 (Thai emergency services) or contact airport staff for ambulance assistance.

Family Facilities

Baby care rooms with changing tables and nursing facilities are located in the arrivals and departures areas of the main terminal (Level 2 and Level 4) and in SAT-1. A children's play area is located in SAT-1 (Level 3). Family lanes at immigration and security are marked. Stroller/wheelchair rentals are available from airport information counters.

Accessibility (PRM)

Comprehensive PRM (Persons with Reduced Mobility) services are available. Notify your airline at booking (minimum 48 hours before departure). Wheelchair assistance is available from all arrival and departure points. Elevators, accessible toilets, and wide corridors are throughout both terminals. Dedicated parking spaces in Zones 2–3 (close to terminal). Contact AOT Care Center: 1722.

Currency Exchange & ATMs

Currency exchange counters (SuperRich, SCB, Kasikorn, Bangkok Bank) operate throughout Level 2 arrivals and Level 4 departures. Rates are slightly below mid-market but competitive for an airport. For the best rates, use Super Rich (orange or green) booths, which are well-known for fair rates in Thailand. ATMs accepting international Visa/Mastercard/UnionPay are plentiful throughout all levels. ATMs often impose a THB 200–220 foreign card fee per transaction β€” use a fee-free card (Wise, Revolut) to avoid this.

Luggage Storage

AIRPORTELs operates the main left-luggage facility at Suvarnabhumi, located on the Basement Level next to the Airport Rail Link station. Open 24 hours. Rates: THB 100–200 per bag per day depending on size. They also offer a luggage delivery service (bags delivered to your Bangkok hotel before you arrive). Booking can be done online at airportels.com.

Smoking

Smoking is prohibited throughout the entire airport building and in most outdoor areas. Designated smoking areas are located outside the terminal at ground level (some exits on Level 1) and in limited airside zones near certain gates. Vaping/e-cigarettes are also prohibited in Thailand β€” importing them carries steep fines and possible arrest; do not bring them into the country.

Prayer Rooms

Dedicated prayer rooms for Muslim passengers (separate rooms for men and women) are located throughout the main terminal and in SAT-1. Qibla directions are marked. Additional multi-faith meditation rooms are available in SAT-1. Ablution facilities (wudu washing stations) are adjacent to prayer rooms.

Showers

Shower facilities are available in the Miracle Lounges and Coral Executive Lounges (access via Priority Pass or walk-up payment). The Novotel hotel pool and spa is accessible to day visitors (without overnight stay) for a fee of approximately THB 500–1,000. For YOTELAIR-style room bookings by the hour, the Boxtel (Basement level) and Miracle Transit Hotel (Concourse G airside) both provide shower access.

Key Performance Indicators (2024)

In 2024, Suvarnabhumi handled 62,234,693 passengers β€” ranking it as the world's 14th–20th busiest airport (source-dependent), the 9th busiest in Asia, and the busiest in Thailand by a significant margin. The airport processed approximately 466,000+ aircraft movements in 2024. The third runway, opened 1 November 2024, increased hourly capacity from 68 to 94 flights, reducing congestion during peak periods. Monthly traffic peaks in December–January and July–August (Thai and Asian holiday seasons). August, Chinese New Year, and Songkran (mid-April) are the busiest periods, with the airport approaching 200,000 passengers per day.

Cargo performance: Suvarnabhumi handles over 1.4 million tonnes of cargo annually, serving as Thailand's primary air freight hub for exports including electronics, automotive parts, fresh food (especially seafood and tropical fruits), and garments. Key cargo carriers: Thai Airways Cargo, FedEx, UPS, DHL, Korean Air Cargo, and China Southern Cargo.

As of 2025, BKK is served by the highest number of airlines in the world β€” 126 scheduled carriers β€” according to AOT data, placing it ahead of Dubai, Frankfurt, and Paris CDG. The airport ranked 7th globally for hub connectivity potential and 9th for overall air connectivity in 2024 (ACI Asia-Pacific/PwC joint report). Thailand's FAA upgrade to Category 1 aviation safety in 2025 is expected to unlock new direct services to the United States, with United Airlines planning Las Vegas–Hong Kong–Bangkok routes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok city centre?
The fastest and cheapest option is the Airport Rail Link (ARL), costing just THB 45 (~€1.15) to Phaya Thai BTS station in 26–30 minutes. The station is on the Basement Level (B Floor) of the main terminal β€” follow 'Airport Rail Link' or 'Train to City' signs from Arrivals Level 2. Alternatively, take a metered taxi from Level 1 (exits 4–6) for about THB 300–500 including expressway tolls, or Grab from Gate 4 on Level 1. Avoid taxis during Bangkok rush hours (07:00–09:30 and 16:00–20:00); the train is much faster.
Is there free WiFi at Suvarnabhumi Airport?
Yes. Free WiFi ('Airportthai_FreeWifi') is available throughout the terminals, historically limited to 2 hours per session. For unlimited internet, purchase a Thai SIM card (True Move H, AIS) from counters in the Level 2 arrivals hall β€” 7-day tourist SIMs start from THB 299 and are excellent value, giving you connectivity throughout Bangkok and all of Thailand.
How early should I arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport?
Allow 3 hours for international flights and 2 hours for domestic. BKK is a very large airport β€” the H-shaped terminal means some gate areas (particularly Concourse G at the far east end) are up to 20 minutes' walk from check-in. If your flight departs from SAT-1 (gates S101–S128), add an extra 15 minutes for the APM shuttle. Immigration queues, especially during peak season (December–January, Songkran, Golden Week), can be lengthy. During Bangkok traffic peak hours, add 30–60 minutes to your road journey time from the city.
Can I sleep overnight at Suvarnabhumi Airport?
Yes, there are several options. Airside passengers can use the Miracle Transit Hotel (Concourse G, Level 4 β€” requires boarding pass) or the Boxtel micro-hotel (Basement Level, near the ARL station) for hourly/overnight stays. The Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel is connected by covered walkway (requires clearing customs), with rooms from ~THB 3,500/night. Budget travellers sometimes sleep on seating in the main terminal, which is open 24 hours, though security staff may move you along. For airport transit without a visa, you can remain in the international airside area.
Where can I store luggage at Suvarnabhumi Airport?
AIRPORTELs operates the main left-luggage facility on the Basement Level (B Floor), right next to the Airport Rail Link station. Open 24 hours. Rates are approximately THB 100–200 per bag per day depending on size. They also offer advance baggage delivery to your Bangkok hotel. Book at airportels.com. No self-service lockers are currently available at BKK.
Which terminal does Thai Airways use at BKK?
Thai Airways International uses primarily Concourses D and E in the main terminal for international departures, and Concourse A for domestic flights. The Thai Royal First Class Lounge and Royal Orchid (Business) Lounges are in Concourse D, Level 3. For international connections, gates in Concourse D (D-gates) are the main Thai Airways hub. Some regional Thai Airways routes use Concourse A alongside Bangkok Airways domestic services.
What is the SAT-1 terminal and do I need to go there?
SAT-1 (Midfield Satellite Terminal 1) is a brand-new terminal opened in 2023, located south of the main terminal and connected by a 3-minute underground automated people mover (APM). If your boarding pass shows Gate S101–S128, you depart from SAT-1 and must take the APM. Allow at least 15 extra minutes after clearing security to reach SAT-1. Airlines currently using SAT-1 include Thai AirAsia X (Japan, Korea, China routes), Thai VietJet Air (Singapore, Vietnam, Taiwan), and several others. SAT-1 was nominated as one of UNESCO's World's Most Beautiful Airports 2024.
Does Priority Pass work at BKK Suvarnabhumi?
Yes, but the network was significantly reduced on 1 April 2025. Effective that date, all airline-operated lounges (including Oman Air, Turkish Airlines, Air France-KLM, Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways Boutique) were removed from Priority Pass. Only the two Thai-owned networks remain: Miracle Lounges (multiple concourses including SAT-1) and The Coral Executive Lounges (Concourses A, C, D). A total of 17 lounges remain accessible through Priority Pass at BKK. Walk-up prices are approximately THB 1,200–1,600 (~€30–€40) for 3 hours.
How much is a taxi from Bangkok Airport to the city?
Expect to pay approximately THB 300–500 total for a metered taxi from BKK to central Bangkok (Sukhumvit, Silom, Siam). This includes: the metered fare (~THB 200–350), a THB 50 airport surcharge (paid in addition to the meter), and expressway tolls (THB 50–75). Always insist the driver uses the meter and take official taxis only from the Level 1 queue (exits 4–6). Do not accept approaches from touts in the arrivals hall. Grab is a reliable alternative with pre-set pricing.
Are there buses from Bangkok Airport to Pattaya?
Yes. Direct bus services to Pattaya depart from the public transportation hub on Level 1 (Gate 8 area). Operated by companies including Pattaya Bus, services run every 1–2 hours and take approximately 90–120 minutes. Prices are around THB 130–160 (~€3.30–€4) one-way. This is by far the most affordable way to reach Pattaya from the airport. Book tickets at the ground transportation centre on Level 1.
What is the best time to visit Bangkok to avoid crowds at the airport?
The airport is busiest during December–January (Christmas/New Year/Chinese New Year preparation), April during Songkran (Thai New Year, mid-April), and July–August (European summer holidays and Asian school break). For the smoothest immigration experience, arrive on weekday mornings outside school holiday periods. The airport recently added 80 automated immigration gates and continues expanding passenger processing capacity for 2025–2026.
Can I connect between Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) airports?
Yes. A free shuttle bus connects the two airports and is available to passengers with onward flight tickets at both airports. Departs from Level 2 Arrivals at BKK, outside Gate 3 (show your flight ticket). The journey takes 45–90 minutes depending on traffic. Runs approximately 05:00–24:00. Always allow at least 3–4 hours between flights for this connection due to traffic unpredictability and the need to re-check in at DMK. Grab or taxi are faster alternatives if you have sufficient budget.

Pro Tips for Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport

At The Airport:
  • Take the Airport Rail Link β€” always. Unless you're staying in the Khao San Road area (which has no direct ARL connection), the ARL to Phaya Thai for THB 45 will almost certainly beat a taxi or Grab in journey time, especially during morning and evening rush hours when Bangkok's expressways turn into parking lots. The ARL runs from the airport's Basement Level β€” follow the blue 'Airport Rail Link' signs from Level 2 Arrivals.
  • The Coral Executive Lounge in Concourse D and Miracle Lounge in Concourse C are the best Priority Pass options remaining after the April 2025 changes that removed airline lounges. The Coral is slightly better rated for food quality (Thai buffet including pad thai, green curry) and shower cleanliness. Arrive 2+ hours before your flight to enjoy the lounge fully β€” most have a 3-hour time limit.
  • For the cheapest and most authentic meal in the airport, head to the food stalls on Level 3 before security on the domestic side β€” local Thai dishes for THB 60–120. Post-security dining is significantly more expensive across all concourses. A coffee in Starbucks on the departure level runs about THB 160–200.
  • Avoid changing money at the first exchange counter you see after clearing customs. Walk past the first row of booths (rates are visibly worse) and look for Super Rich (orange or green logo) which consistently offers the most competitive rates at BKK. Alternatively, use an ATM with a Wise or Revolut card to avoid the THB 200+ per-transaction fee that most Thai ATMs charge foreign cards.
Before You Fly:
  • Check whether your gate is in the Main Terminal (Concourses A–G) or in the new SAT-1 satellite terminal (Gates S101–S128). The SAT-1 is accessed by an underground automated people mover taking 3 minutes β€” but with walk time to the platform, you need an extra 15 minutes minimum. Most departure boards and boarding passes clearly indicate which terminal, but some travellers miss this and have to rush back.
  • Buy a Thai SIM card before leaving the arrivals hall on Level 2. True Move H and AIS booths are right after customs β€” a 7-day tourist SIM with unlimited data costs THB 299–399 (~€7.50–€10) and covers the whole country at fast 4G/5G speeds. Far cheaper than international roaming and lets you use Grab immediately on arrival.
  • For an early morning departure, consider staying at the Novotel Suvarnabhumi (connected via covered walkway) the night before rather than racing to the airport in Bangkok rush-hour traffic, which can turn a 45-minute trip into 2 hours. The hotel's pool, gym, and several restaurants are worth the price premium for long-haul travellers.
  • If you're departing on Thai AirAsia X or Thai VietJet flights to Japan, Korea, or Vietnam, double-check your terminal before heading to security β€” those routes now depart from SAT-1 (S-gates), not the main terminal concourses. Missing this detail is the most common passenger error at BKK since 2024.
Common Mistakes:
  • Getting into an unofficial taxi: Despite repeated crackdowns, touts still approach passengers in the Level 2 arrivals hall with offers of 'cheap taxi.' These have no meter and charges are arbitrary β€” commonly THB 1,000+ for a trip that should cost THB 350. Always walk down to Level 1, take a numbered ticket from the kiosk at exits 4–6, and board the officially assigned taxi. If in doubt, use Grab from the dedicated Grab Zone at Gate 4, Level 1.
  • Trying to walk between the main terminal and SAT-1: These are separate buildings 1+ km apart with no pedestrian route between them. The only way between them is the underground APM shuttle β€” find the APM entrance inside the main terminal (Level B or signposted from check-in halls). Passengers who try to walk outside get confused and miss flights.
  • Ignoring Bangkok traffic when taking a taxi back to the airport: If your flight is at 08:00–10:00, leaving your Bangkok hotel at 05:30 by taxi may still result in 60–90 minute journey times due to morning rush hour. The Airport Rail Link starts at 05:10 from the airport side and runs reliably β€” plan your return journey on the ARL even when the taxi looks faster at that time of morning. Bangkok traffic is genuinely unpredictable.
