Airport Overview

Singapore Changi Airport — officially Singapore Changi Airport, commonly referred to simply as Changi Airport — is the principal international airport of the Republic of Singapore and one of the most significant aviation hubs in the Asia-Pacific region. Located in the Changi planning area in the eastern part of the island-city-state, the airport sits approximately 24 kilometres (15 miles) northeast of the Downtown Core (Marina Bay/Raffles Place area) and covers roughly 25 square kilometres (9.7 sq mi) of land. Changi opened on 1 July 1981, replacing the former Paya Lebar Airport as Singapore's main gateway, and has since undergone continuous expansion to become a world-renowned aviation and lifestyle destination.

The airport serves as the global home base for Singapore Airlines — consistently ranked among the world's top five airlines — along with its subsidiaries Singapore Airlines Cargo and Scoot, a regional low-cost carrier. With more than 100 international airlines operating scheduled services, Changi connects Singapore to over 150 cities across approximately 100 countries and territories, with around 7,400 weekly flights departing and arriving, or one flight approximately every 80 seconds. In 2024, Changi Airport handled 67.7 million passenger movements — representing a 14.8% year-on-year increase and reaching 99.1% of pre-COVID 2019 traffic levels — along with 366,000 aircraft movements and 1.99 million tonnes of air freight (+14.6% year-on-year). Updated 2025 figures show further growth to approximately 69.98 million passengers.

Changi currently operates four passenger terminals (T1, T2, T3, T4) with a combined annual handling capacity of approximately 90 million passengers. Terminal 5, designed to eventually double overall capacity and accommodate an anticipated 50+ million additional passengers, began construction in the first half of 2025 and is expected to be operational by the mid-2030s. A fifth runway is also planned as part of the Changi East development. Connecting Terminals 1, 2 and 3 is Jewel Changi Airport — a world-famous retail, dining and indoor garden complex opened in April 2019, featuring the Rain Vortex, the world's tallest indoor waterfall at 40 metres. Jewel attracted a record footfall of over 80 million visitors in 2024 alone.

Changi Airport has earned an unparalleled global reputation for quality, efficiency and passenger experience. It has been named the "World's Best Airport" by Skytrax a record thirteen times, including an unprecedented eight consecutive wins from 2013 to 2020, again in 2023, and most recently in 2025. Since its opening, the airport has won over 680 international awards. The on-site Crowne Plaza Changi Airport has been voted the world's best airport hotel ten times by Skytrax, covering 2015–2020 and 2022–2025. In 2024, China was Changi's largest passenger market, followed by Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia and Thailand, with Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta, Denpasar (Bali) and Hong Kong ranking as the top five busiest routes.

Transportation Guide

Getting from Singapore Changi Airport to the City

Singapore Changi Airport is exceptionally well-connected to the city centre, offering four main transport options: the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) train, public bus, taxi, and ride-hailing apps (Grab, Gojek). All transport options are available from all four terminals. The airport is approximately 20 km from the city centre, and travel time ranges from 25 minutes (taxi off-peak) to 60 minutes (bus in heavy traffic). Singapore's transport infrastructure is world-class, and arriving passengers will find all options clearly signposted in English throughout all arrival halls.

MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) — Recommended Option

The MRT is the fastest, cheapest and most convenient public transport option for most travellers. Changi Airport MRT Station (station code CG2) is located at the basement level of Terminals 2 and 3. Passengers arriving at Terminal 1 should take the free Skytrain to Terminal 2 or 3 to access the MRT station. Passengers arriving at Terminal 4 should take the free shuttle bus to Terminal 2 or 3 (approximately 10 minutes), then proceed to the MRT.

Two routes connect Changi to Central Singapore:

  • Route 1 (most common): Take the Changi Line from Changi Airport (CG2) one stop west to Tanah Merah (EW4), then transfer to the East-West Line (green line) westbound. Key stops: Paya Lebar (EW8), City Hall (EW13/NS25), Raffles Place (EW14/NS26). Total journey: approximately 35–40 minutes to Raffles Place / Marina Bay area.
  • Route 2 (for Orchard/Buona Vista): From Changi Airport, travel one stop to Expo (CG1/DT35), then transfer to the Downtown Line (blue line). Key stops: Bugis (DT14), Bayfront (DT16), Marina Bay (DT17), Chinatown (DT19), Botanic Gardens (DT9), Buona Vista (DT23).
  • Fare: SGD 1.50–2.50 (approx. €1.05–€1.75) using an EZ-Link card or contactless Visa/Mastercard; slightly higher with a paper single-journey ticket
  • Operating hours: Monday–Saturday: first train ~05:31; last train ~23:18 | Sundays/Public Holidays: first train ~05:59; last train ~23:18
  • Frequency: Every 5–8 minutes during peak hours; every 10–12 minutes off-peak
  • Payment: EZ-Link card (stored-value), NETS FlashPay, contactless Visa/Mastercard, or Singapore Tourist Pass (unlimited rides; from SGD 17 for 1 day, SGD 25 for 2 days, SGD 30 for 3 days). Cards available from MRT ticket machines and Changi Recommends counters in the terminals

Public Bus

Public buses serve all four terminals and connect to various parts of Singapore at very low cost. Bus stops are located outside the arrival halls of each terminal. The most popular route for tourists is Bus 36/36A (Terminals 1, 2, 3), which travels via the expressway to Orchard Road and the city area — journey time approximately 55–70 minutes. Buses are air-conditioned.

  • Bus 36/36A: T1, T2, T3 → Orchard Road / City. Operating hours: approximately 06:00–midnight daily
  • Buses 24, 34, 110: Serve Terminal 4 to various suburban destinations
  • Fare: approximately SGD 1.50–2.50 (€1.05–€1.75) using EZ-Link; cash fare slightly higher (exact change required; no change given)
  • Night buses: Limited overnight bus services (NightRider routes) operate after MRT closing hours on Fridays, Saturdays and eve of public holidays

Taxi

Taxis are available 24/7 at designated taxi stands in the arrival halls of all four terminals. All taxis are metered and regulated — there is no haggling. A ride to central Singapore (Orchard Road, Marina Bay, Raffles Place) typically takes 25–35 minutes off-peak and costs SGD 25–45 (approx. €17–€32) before surcharges.

Airport surcharges (from 1 July 2024 — permanent):

  • SGD 8 additional surcharge for trips from Changi Airport between 17:00–23:59 daily
  • SGD 6 additional surcharge for trips from Changi Airport at all other times (00:00–16:59)
  • Midnight surcharge: +50% of metered fare, 00:00–05:59
  • Peak-hour surcharge: +25%, Mon–Fri 06:00–09:29; Mon–Sun 17:00–23:59; Sat, Sun & PH 10:00–13:59

Payment: cash or major credit/debit cards. For pre-booked fixed-price transfers, use the Ground Transport Concierge (GTC) counters in each terminal's arrivals hall — rates are SGD 55 (4-seater) or SGD 60 (6-seater) for any destination in Singapore, available 24/7.

Ride-Hailing: Grab, Gojek, Tada, Ryde

Grab is Singapore's dominant ride-hailing app, with Gojek, Tada Mobility and Ryde as alternatives. Designated pick-up points for private hire cars are located in all terminal arrival areas — follow signs for "Private Hire Car" or "PHC pick-up". Fares are quoted upfront in the app. Approximately SGD 20–50 to city depending on surge pricing, time, and destination. Note: Airport surcharges still apply to app-booked rides.

Airport City Shuttle

A shared shuttle service connects Changi Airport directly to over 100 hotels across Singapore's main tourist and business districts (Orchard Road, Marina Bay, Bugis, Chinatown, Sentosa). Book at the shuttle counter in arrivals or online. Rates: approximately SGD 9–10 per adult (€6–€7); SGD 7 for children. Journey time: 45–90 minutes depending on number of hotel stops. The shuttle is an excellent budget alternative for solo travellers or pairs heading to the main hotel belts.

Car Rental

All major international car rental companies operate at Changi Airport, including Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, and local provider GoJet. Rental desks are located in the arrival halls of Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 4. Note: Singapore's city centre has an Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system with tolls applicable during peak hours. Driving is on the left. Singapore roads are very well maintained.

Cross-Border Transport to Malaysia

Singapore is connected to Malaysia (Johor Bahru) by two road links. Express buses and coaches to Johor Bahru and beyond depart from the Queen Street/Lavender Street bus terminals in the city — not directly from Changi Airport. Only licensed Singapore or Malaysian taxis with an ASEAN PSV Permit may transport passengers cross-border from Changi Airport directly.

Designated outdoor smoking areas are located outside each terminal building on the ground level (landside, before security). There are no smoking areas airside in any Changi terminal. Penalties for smoking in prohibited areas in Singapore are significant (fines up to SGD 1,000). Plan accordingly.

Prayer Rooms / Chapels

Multi-faith prayer rooms are available in all four terminals, both landside and airside. Prayer rooms in the transit areas are accessible 24 hours. Wudu (ablution) facilities are available adjacent to Muslim prayer rooms in all terminals. A Christian chapel service is also available through the airport chaplaincy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get from Singapore Changi Airport to the city centre?
The MRT train is the best option for most travellers — take the Changi Line from the basement of Terminal 2 or 3 to Tanah Merah (EW4), then transfer to the East-West Line. Journey to Raffles Place or Marina Bay takes about 35–40 minutes and costs only SGD 1.50–2.50 using an EZ-Link card or contactless payment. Taxis cost SGD 25–45 (plus airport surcharge) and take 25–35 minutes. For Terminal 1 or 4, take the free Skytrain or shuttle bus to T2/T3 first to access the MRT.
Is there free WiFi at Singapore Changi Airport?
Yes — free, unlimited Wi-Fi is available throughout all four terminals (T1, T2, T3, T4) and in Jewel Changi Airport. Connect to 'Changi Airport Free Wifi' — no registration, password, or time limit. Speeds are fast enough for video calls and streaming. Wi-Fi is available both landside (public areas) and airside (transit areas). This is one of the fastest and most reliable free airport Wi-Fi networks in the world.
How early should I arrive at Changi Airport?
Changi recommends arriving at least 3 hours before departure for international flights. The airport is exceptionally efficient — immigration and security typically process passengers very quickly, and 92%+ of passengers clear within minutes. However, during peak periods (school holidays, Chinese New Year, Christmas/year-end) allow extra time. Early Check-In is available with 39 airlines, allowing bag drop up to 24 hours (or 48 hours for Singapore Airlines) before your flight, so you can check in early and explore Jewel.
Can I sleep overnight at Changi Airport?
Yes — Changi is well-regarded for long layover comfort. Transit passengers can book airside transit hotels: Aerotel (T1, with rooftop pool), Ambassador Transit Hotel (T2 and T3). Rates start from SGD 50–90 for short stays. YOTELAIR in Jewel (outside immigration) offers compact cabins from SGD 60 for 4 hours. Free rest zones with comfortable chairs are available throughout all terminals 24/7. T3 transit has the best free seating options. The terminals are air-conditioned, safe, and well-lit overnight.
Where can I store luggage at Changi Airport?
Left luggage/baggage storage services are available in all four terminals, both in public arrival areas and in transit areas (airside). Rates are approximately SGD 5–9 per item per day depending on bag size. Airside storage counters in transit areas are generally open 24 hours; landside counters (public area) operate approximately 06:00–22:00. Storage services are operated by SATS. For longer storage, the iShopChangi / Changi Recommends counters also offer luggage storage booking options.
Which terminal does my airline use at Changi Airport?
Terminal 1: British Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Qantas, Thai Airways, Garuda Indonesia, Philippine Airlines, and others. Terminal 2: Singapore Airlines (select routes — Japan, Korea), Scoot, ANA, some Air Canada flights. Terminal 3: Singapore Airlines (primary long-haul terminal), Malaysia Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Etihad. Terminal 4: Cathay Pacific, AirAsia (all variants), Cebu Pacific, Jetstar Asia, Spring Airlines, Peach. Always verify on your boarding pass or the airline's website — some airlines use multiple terminals.
What is Jewel Changi Airport and do I need to leave the airport to visit it?
Jewel Changi Airport is a spectacular glass-domed retail and entertainment complex connected directly to Terminals 1, 2 and 3 via covered walkways. It features the Rain Vortex (world's tallest indoor waterfall at 40 metres), Forest Valley indoor garden, over 300 dining and shopping outlets, the YOTELAIR hotel, and Canopy Park attractions. Transit passengers can access Jewel from T1, T2 or T3 airside without clearing immigration (via dedicated transit links). Landside passengers simply walk from their terminal. Jewel is open daily approximately 10:00–22:00 for most attractions.
Can I do a free tour of Singapore on a layover?
Yes — Changi Airport offers the famous Free Singapore Tour for transit passengers with a layover of 5.5 to 24 hours. Two tour options are available: City Sights Tour (approximately 2.5 hours) and Jewel Changi Airport Tour (approximately 1.5 hours). Tours depart from the Singapore Visitor Centre at T1, T2 and T3 transit areas. Registration is free and first-come, first-served. You'll need your boarding pass and travel documents for the onward flight. Tours operate throughout the day at regular intervals. This is one of the world's most praised layover perks.
Is there a lounge I can access without flying business class at Changi?
Yes. Several pay-access lounges are open to any passenger regardless of airline or class. The marhaba Lounge (T1 and T3, airside) accepts Priority Pass, DragonPass, and direct purchase (~SGD 45–55). Plaza Premium Lounge (T1 and T4) accepts Priority Pass and walk-in payment. SATS Premier Lounge accepts Priority Pass at T1 and T3. The Blossom – SATS & Plaza Premium Lounge at T4 is Priority Pass-accessible. All these lounges offer hot food, beverages, Wi-Fi, and shower facilities. Book via Priority Pass app or at the lounge entrance.
How do I transfer between terminals at Changi Airport?
Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are connected airside (transit) by the free Skytrain service, operating 05:00–02:30 daily. During Skytrain non-operational hours (02:30–05:00), transit passengers can use the inter-terminal travelators/walkways. Landside (public area), a free shuttle bus connects T1, T2 and T3. Terminal 4 is separate: a free 24-hour shuttle bus connects it to T2 and T3 landside (8–10 minutes). Airside, transit passengers can take the dedicated airside bus from T1 (Gate C21) or T3 (Immigration Hall A) to T4, every ~13 minutes, 24 hours (journey: 12–18 minutes). Always allow at least 60–90 minutes for T4 connections.
What currency is used in Singapore and where can I exchange money?
Singapore uses the Singapore Dollar (SGD, S$). Currency exchange counters are available in all terminal arrival halls and transit areas at Changi Airport. For better exchange rates, use licensed money changers in the city (Raffles Place area, Lucky Plaza on Orchard Road, or People's Park Complex in Chinatown) — they typically offer 5–10% better rates than airport counters. ATMs accepting Visa, Mastercard, and UnionPay are available in all terminals. Fee-free multi-currency cards (Wise, Revolut) work well at Singapore ATMs.
Are there any unique free activities for transit passengers at Changi Airport?
Changi is famous for its free transit amenities. Highlights include: free movie screenings at Changi Cinema (T3); free massage chairs throughout T1–T3; free entertainment zones and children's play areas; a butterfly garden in T3; a cactus garden on T3's rooftop; free swimming pool access via Aerotel (T1, extra fee for non-guests); free Singapore city tours (5.5h+ layover); free Jewel tour (connecting to the Rain Vortex and Forest Valley); and free Wi-Fi throughout. There is truly no other airport in the world that offers such an extensive and genuinely free transit experience.

Pro Tips for Singapore Changi Airport

At The Airport:
  • Transit passengers connecting from T1/T2/T3 to T4 (AirAsia, Cathay Pacific, Cebu Pacific) should allow at least 60–90 minutes minimum connection time. The airside transit bus from T3 (Immigration Hall A) to T4 runs every 13 minutes and takes 12 minutes — but you must first clear immigration at T1/2/3 if required by your connection, then check-in at T4. The airports recommends 90 minutes minimum for T4 connections.
  • The Changi Airport Tax Refund counters (Global Blue, Planet) are located in all terminal departure halls before security — get your GST refund claim forms stamped by customs BEFORE you check in your bags if you purchased large or electronic items in Singapore. You cannot go back landside after clearing security.
  • The best free nap spots at Changi: T3 transit has the widest and most comfortable free reclining chair areas, particularly in the quieter satellite gates. Bring an eye mask and earbuds — the terminals are always lit and slightly noisy. Alternatively, T3's Changi Cinema (airside, transit level) is dark and quiet, showing movies continuously — perfect for sleeping.
  • Singapore's airport surcharge for taxis increases significantly after 17:00 (SGD 8 surcharge vs SGD 6 at other times). If you're arriving around 16:30–17:00 and your destination is nearby, consider grabbing a taxi slightly earlier than your luggage might allow, or use Grab/Gojek where you can compare prices including surcharges before confirming.
Before You Fly:
  • Always verify which terminal your airline uses — Singapore Airlines uses both T2 and T3 depending on the route (T3 for most long-haul; T2 for Japan, Korea, Maldives, Nepal), and getting it wrong means a 10+ minute Skytrain ride and a potentially missed lounge visit. Check the SIA app or your boarding pass email confirmation for the terminal and gate.
  • If you have more than 5.5 hours of transit time, register for Changi's free city sightseeing tour from the Singapore Visitor Centre in T2 or T3 transit areas. Tours fill up quickly during peak periods, so head there as soon as you clear immigration. You'll need a valid visa (or be from a visa-exempt country) and your onward boarding pass.
  • Download the Changi App before arriving — it includes an interactive terminal map, live flight information, early check-in options, parking bookings, dining pre-orders, and exclusive shopping vouchers. It's one of the best airport apps in the world and will save significant time navigating the terminals.
  • If you're taking the MRT into the city, buy an EZ-Link card or use a contactless Mastercard/Visa bank card. Do NOT buy single-journey tickets — they cost significantly more and require exact change on buses. The Singapore Tourist Pass (from SGD 17/day) is worth it if you'll make multiple MRT/bus trips during your stay.
Common Mistakes:
  • Assuming all terminals are the same distance from the MRT — only T2 and T3 have direct MRT access (the station is at their basement level). T1 passengers must take the Skytrain (~5 min) from T1 to T2/T3 to reach the MRT station. T4 passengers must take the shuttle bus (~10 min) to T2/T3. Build this extra time into your journey when calculating MRT departure times.
  • Forgetting that Singapore has zero-tolerance for drugs, chewing gum (restricted but not wholly banned), and strict anti-smoking laws. E-cigarettes and vaping devices are completely prohibited in Singapore — you can face fines up to SGD 10,000 and even prosecution if caught importing vaping devices. Leave your vaping gear at home.
  • Leaving Jewel Changi Airport exploration until after clearing immigration — you can visit Jewel directly from T1, T2 or T3 before clearing immigration (as a landside visitor) or after (as a transit/airside visitor via the airside Jewel access points). The Rain Vortex is most impressive when the waterfall is running at full power — typically 10:00–22:00. Don't rush through Jewel; allow at least 1–2 hours to explore properly.
